commissioned project

THE ELDER THINGS AND OTHER UNCATALOGED SPECIES

I was commissioned to design a decorative poster illustration based on the tale "At the Mountains of Madness" by the american horror author H.P. Lovecraft. The story is narrated by the character Dr. William Dyer, a geology professor who survived a failed research expedition in unexplored points of the South Pole in the year of 1930. Throughout the story the narrator faces the existence of nameless creatures whose conception, morphology and culture are beyond human comprehension.

The intent on this project was to explore how the discoveries made in this expedition would become public in the scientific community if Dr. William Dyer decided to publish an article 10 years after the events narrated in Lovecraft's story.

Creature design

To design the creature I based on Lovecraft's description made in the tale, but making some modifications regarding the morphology justifying it as an inherent members exposure behavior of the species.

Illustration made in traditional media using pencil.

Final look

Inspired on textbooks and scientific articles design, I designed the page using the information about the morphology and culture of these creatures depicted in Lovecraft's tale and his Cthulhu Mythos lore. Assuming that the original article would have been published in 1940, I added the aspect of an aged document to the piece intending to visually contextualize the purpose of the illustration.

Design made digitally using Adobe Photoshop software.
